Storage times and freshness tips for hardshell tacos in different conditions.
Safety first: This guide provides general information. When in doubt, throw it out! Trust your senses and err on the side of caution. If something smells, looks, or tastes off, don't consume it.
Loss of crispness (staleness), softening or becoming pliable, off-odor (rancid smell if fats have oxidized, though less common for commercial products), visible mold (if exposed to moisture).
Look for visible mold, especially if any moisture was introduced. Touch the shells: they should be firm and crisp, not soft or bendy. Smell them: they should smell neutral or faintly of corn/wheat, not stale, musty, or rancid. A small taste can confirm crispness and flavor, but if any visual or smell signs are present, do not taste.
To maintain crispness, transfer opened shells to an airtight container or a heavy-duty resealable bag. Expel as much air as possible. Keep away from humidity. Stale shells can often be re-crisped in a low oven (around 250-300°F / 120-150°C) for 5-10 minutes.
Freezer burn (dry, discolored spots on the shells), significant loss of original texture upon thawing (may become more brittle or fragile), absorption of freezer odors.
Visually inspect for freezer burn. While true spoilage (like mold) is inhibited by freezing, texture degradation is the main concern. They should still look consistent in color. Smell for any off-odors absorbed from the freezer.
To freeze, wrap the shells tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors. Thaw at room temperature for a few hours. For best results, re-crisp in a low oven after thawing.
Punctured or damaged packaging, signs of insect infestation, unusual odors permeating the packaging. Mold is highly unlikely in an unopened, dry product.
Visually inspect the packaging for any tears, holes, or signs of pests. Check the 'best by' date on the package. If the package seems compromised, discard.
Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or humidity. Ensure packaging remains intact to prevent moisture absorption and pest entry.
